this is my mulligan for the week. i dug it up from god knows where. it had so much noise on the tracks that making it halfway presentable took just about as long as recording an actual song. kind of defeated the purpose. oh well. you win some you lose some. dems da brakes. c’est la vie.
i almost didn’t get this in before saturday technically ended at midnight. long story short, my microphone input volume was at it’s lowest possible setting and I had already laid down most of it before I noticed. I had to, um, improvise.
this is my freebie this week. just had nothing in me today. when that happens what can be done but to post an old song i once wrote about an asshole cat? Yes, that’s really him sleeping in the picture. a rare moment of quietude between bites and scratches. tom waits said it best, “we’re innocent when we dream.”
once i went on a cross country road trip with my friend dan. i had a brief love affair with pedro the lion during that trip. who would have thought some part of my brain would remember that and come up with this? that’s the odd and cool thing about this project.
also, i liked metallica for 4 months when i was 12. gimme 75 days or so. that’ll rear it’s ugly head.
this is a pretty fun pop song. sorta sounds like the gerbils, right? don’t forget to email me if you want in on the mailing list, and as always, if you like it can you reblog or post a link on facebook? I’ll get you tickets to a great adventure theme park of your choice. one day.
sunday, january 18th - “if you don’t love me i’m gonna throw up”
this is my get out of jail free card for the week. i waited until i absolutely had to use it. like the nitro boost on some old racing video game. actually, i always used those early when i was a kid. liked to get it out of the way. you too?
thanks to jesse novak for the help getting it louder.
friday, january 16th - “you’re only as good as your latest song”
this sounds pretty good with headphones. i don’t know. it’s kind of all over the place. i worked on it so long and listened to it so many times that i coulda sworn i heard both a rap scratch and a bird chirping somewhere in the mix. both are next to impossible.
a question sometimes comes to my mind. what if i go on trips? i guess i sort of want some semblance of a normal life, eventually. i decided to do an experiment with this song. it was recorded live into a dingy old tape recorder my roommate once loaned me and forgot about. i think it suits the song.
i couldn’t resist a couple of simple overdubs though. i’m not on a trip yet. song title stolen from maxwell williams. thanks, max.
wednesday, january 14th - “we’re just floating away”
i’ve thought of a couple of hazards regarding this project. deafness and obesity. still, it’s worth both. i really like this song. if you do too, you should post about this blog on your facebook/tumblr etc. i’ll owe you a cookie.
i don’t think this karaoke microphone likes doing vocals on loud songs like this. i might have to do something about that. also, the comments system is online. and i’m extremely, almost supernaturally, tired.
I decided, upon much deliberation, that I am allowed to do covers once in a blue moon. It has to feel right and I have to change it enough. Here is my version of a Brian Wilson/Beach Boys rarity. Happy Monday.
